Term 1 Final Project

Messenger No.9

In an era when communication has long transcended language and consciousness, humanity created the “Messenger” series of spacecraft to carry the final remnants of culture and memory into the depths of the universe.

Sketch

Messenger No.9 is an Ark-class transmitter. Its mission is not conquest, but the continuation of human civilization — to scatter the seeds of culture across the unknown through data, symbols, and media. When the Ark lands, what it leaves behind is not a material trace, but a perceivable, interpretable, and regenerable order of memory.

The Envoy is not a ruler, but a vessel — a silent wanderer who descends upon distant worlds without sound or claim. Wherever it lands, the air itself begins to rearrange, thought takes new shape, and memory bends toward an unseen order. It speaks no words, yet entire civilizations remember its arrival.

Model

From Concept to Production

In this project, I used Unreal Engine 5 to create a high-fidelity Metahuman character and applied ZBrush to sculpt the character’s clothing, focusing on garment structure, fabric folds, and surface details. During the modeling stage, I worked with both Maya and Blender to build the character, environment, and spacecraft, and further refined the models to improve their overall quality. I also created textures for the character, scene, and spacecraft, adjusting material nodes to enhance surface detail, visual depth, and realism. For the character, I integrated the models and attempted skeletal rigging in preparation for subsequent animation work.

In the post-production phase, I designed camera movements and performed shot tracking, while systematically adjusting the overall world environment. This included lighting setup, render engine parameter tuning, and compositing refinements to strengthen the atmosphere and emotional tone of the visuals, ensuring the final outcome aligned as closely as possible with my original visual intent.

Reflection and Critical Evaluation

Throughout this project, I encountered several issues related to planning and execution, particularly in time management. Early progress led me to underestimate the technical complexity of later stages, leaving insufficient time for problem-solving and iteration. When the project reached model integration, character rigging, and rendering stages, overlapping technical tasks negatively affected the schedule.

A number of technical challenges emerged during production, including software instability, cross-software workflow issues, and difficulties with Metahuman integration and skeletal rigging. Limited experience with complex pipelines resulted in repeated trial-and-error, slowing progress. Inadequate file management and version control also led to occasional data loss, increasing both time pressure and stress.

From a technical and visual perspective, scene refinement remained limited. While the main structure was completed, insufficient development of secondary props, material detail, and asset optimization reduced spatial depth and narrative clarity.

Overall, this project highlighted gaps in my technical proficiency and pipeline planning. Moving forward, I aim to strengthen my skills in character workflows, material development, and technical optimization, while improving time management and file management practices to achieve more stable and refined results in future projects.
